Developing the Human Resource

Considering the importance of the Human Resources, efforts should be made to develop the inherent skills, talents and abilities of our people.

 

Education 

Human beings are born with certain innate skills, talents and abilities. The main aim of Education is to tap into these resources in individuals and develop them to the fullest potential. Our educational system, with several levels running from kindergarten to tertiary, caters for the intellectual, physical, social, emotional and spiritual development of the individual. Exposure to education therefore, assists individuals to become productive members of society.

 

 Health

A healthy person may be described as one whose physical, mental and emotional capacities are not affected by any ailments or deficiencies. There is a direct relationship between a healthy nation and its productive capacities. It is for this reason that governments are concerned with developing and maintaining an effective  health care system.

Primary/Preventative (System that deals with preventing ailments/diseases) . These include:

  • education on the importance of breast feeding
  • education on the constituents of a balanced diet
  • provision of immunization/vaccination
  • collection of proper disposal of garbage
  • provision of facilities for sports/recreation
  • provision of potable drinking water

Secondary/Curative (Systems that deals with curing ailments/diseases). These include

  • maintenance of health centers and mental institutions that deal with curing ailments/diseases
  • diagnosis of diseases/ailments
  • administering of medication
  • performance of corrective surgery
  • performance of radiotherapy
  • administering of physiotherapy
  • therapeutic and psychiatric services

 

Recreation

Recreation is an important contributor to the total well- being of an individual. A person occupied in a particular career needs compensatory recreational activities that serve as a source of relaxation. This prepares the individual with renewed strength, will and vitality to approach the next day’s work. A person whos job is physically demanding in most instances requires a hobby that is mentally stimulating such as music, art observing nature and reading. On the other hand a person with a sedentary job usually finds physical activity rewarding and refreshing.

 

Religion 

Indeed, one of the main aims of education is the development of character. Society can only progress if the actions of its citizens are based on the pristine and timeless values of love, peace, truth, righteousness, non- violence, honesty and dedication to duty. If only all men could be convinced of the benefits of acting honestly and giving of their best at the workplace, these alone can assure a healthy mind and a healthy body.  Of what use is it to an of the soul! Herein likes the importance of religion in developing the human resource.

Protection

Individuals may be healthy, educated, religious, and posses a good balance between work and recreation. However, many such individuals are under the constant threat from criminal activities as drug abuse, robbery, rape a nd murder. Under such circumstances life and limb are threatened and a feeling of insecurity exists. Individual development and aspiration for maximizing one’s potential are  therefore stifled. An atmosphere of peace and security must exist if individuals are to achieve their highest goals. In recognition of the governments have instituted a number of measures to ensure a safe and crime-free society.
