Social Change is defined as the shift in human interactions that transform the existing cultural and social institutions. These shifts usually occur gradually developing over time.

As the world continues to evolve, the institution, family,  finds itself being greatly affected by such. Here are a few changes to note:

  • The decline of traditional families (i.e a family comprising of a father, a mother and child/children) and the birth of One- parent households, same sex unions, child-free couples and inter-racial marriages.
  • Extended families are becoming less in numbers as married couples move out of the family home and occupy a home of their own.
  • Two income households are extremely popular as women are now  actively apart of the labour force. This is a result of their access to education and training, the presence of femininization in the workplace as women are now viewed just as compatible as their male counter-parts.
  • Prevalence of Divorces  that may lead to one- parent households as well as Blended or Reorganized families.
  • Child custody and support provisions are backed by law. Absent and inactive fathers are bound  by law to take care of their children by sharing the responsibility.
  • Technology has impacted the family  both positively and negatively. While it serves as a convenience and creates jobs, it can also affect the way in which family members interact and spend time with one another.  Families rarely sit together and have meals as everyone are now focused on being isolated with their devices.  Quality family time is lost
