It has been seen that during adolescence individuals show a desire for greater independence and like to be treated as adults. As such, they tend to resist any strong demands from parents. It is during this period that both parents and their teenage children complain of the existence of the ‘generation gap’.
This is a situation in which older and younger people do not understand each other because of their different experiences, opinions, habits, and behaviour. In short, parents and children differ when it comes to matters of everyday life.
They may share differing views on :
Music- while teenagers may enjoy and listen to upbeat music played very loudly, their parents may prefer soft, classical music
Clothes– teenagers preferring to wear more trendy, short and even revealing clothing whilst parents insist on long, flowing apparel.
Freedom- children want to go anywhere, anytime, parents want children to be home before dark.
Friends – the choice of friends continues to be a contributor towards the gap of both generations. Children may associate themselves with persons they’re comfortable with who may or may not be a positive influence. Parents always prefer a responsible and respectful friend group.
