Filtration is used to separate suspensions, i.e. mixtures containing an undissolved solid in a liquid.
It uses a filter paper to separate the solid from the liquid. The filter paper works as a sieve and the solid particles that are too big to pass through the filter paper remains on the filter paper, this is called ‘residue’. The liquid portion is collected in a container at the bottom and is called the ‘filtrate’.
Common uses of filtration includes the purification of drinking water and making coffee.
